Ecuador World Cup Preview
Ecuador World Cup Preview
Ecuador is playing on their home continent, but they not only have the third worst betting odds to win their group, but also the worst odds to win the World Cup from teams from South America. One of their best players in Chucho Benitez tragically passed away and that was a key loss. One question for the squad is can they win away from home? They did not do so in qualifying and they won at home, as teams could not deal with playing at Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, which was above 9,000 feet it altitude.
Group Preview
Ecuador was drawn into E, which is one of the weaker ones, along with France, Switzerland, and Honduras. The squad plays at a very high tempo pace, but they do not have a great defense and they are not an organized squad lacking in team-game tactics. That will really hurt them facing the very sound tactical teams of Switzerland and France. They should beat Honduras without a problem, but are betting underdogs against the French and the Swiss.

Qualifying
Ecuador qualified for Brazil because of their home record and overall in South American qualifying they were only 3-4-4. However, at home they did beat a couple of squads that are playing this summer in Chile and Colombia. They only scored more than 1 goal in a quarter of their qualifying matches and that was the worst percentage of any team that is playing in Brazil.
Strengths and Weaknesses
The fast paced style of the squad can rattle opponents, but that may not be the case playing Switzerland and France. Felipe Caicedo from Lokomotiv Moscow has ahd a good season for the Russian squad after flaming out of the premier league and he will be counted on the press the offensive attack. One strength of the squad is that they score a lot of headers and Edison Mendez from LDU Quito is a master at those types of goals. Antonio Valencia from Manchester United is a strong offensive MF, but his defense will also be key this summer. Ecuador plays at such a fast pace that they are vulnerable on the counter-attack.
