Part of the excitement of World Cup betting is putting down a wager on who will walk away the tournament’s Golden Boot Award.

There are only a few things more prestigious than winning the Golden Boot, which is bestowed upon the individual scoring more goals than any other player on the biggest stage in soccer. Likewise it is to the soccer handicapper, who correctly predicts the winner.

However, forecasting who will win this coveted title every four years, is surprisingly more difficult than one might imagine, so we here at Coppers Picks have decided to assemble a list of the top five candidates we think will have the best chance to win the 2014 World Cup Golden Boot Award in Brazil this summer.

5. LIONEL MESSI 15/2 — Although Argentina’s supreme striker Lionel Messi has scored just one goal in two World Cup tournament appearances, he has still been slated as the favorite by oddmakers to take home the Golden Boot this summer. While Messi is without a doubt one of the world’s best soccer players, we have to disagree with this, but still believe he is worthy of being in the top five.

4. SERGIO AGUERO 16/1 — Coming in at No. 4 on oour list is another Argentinean, who we think will finally have his best chance of finally emerging from the shadow of teammate Messi, to take his spot on the international stage. The Manchester City striker tallied 74 La Liga goals and holds the English Premier League record of 50 goals in 82 matches since he them in 2011. He has also scored 21 goals in 47 international appearances, and is a solid bet to win the Golden Boot this summer.

3. KARIM BENZEMA 25/1 — Since France appear to have what it takes to move out of the group stages with a first place finish, it only makes sense that one of their best footballers makes our list. The French should score plenty of goals against Switzerland, Honduras and Ecuador, and even though Benzema has just 19 goals in 65 games international matches, the Real Madrid star should see the back of net quite often.

2. LUKAS PODOLSKI 75/1 — Germany is a heavy favorite to win the 2014 World Cup, so picking a player from its squad is a no brainer. We think savvy football handicappers can cash in big here considering the odds. Sure Podolski has some stiff competition among his teammates, but that could incentivize the Arsenal forward, who netted 46 goals in 112 games for Die Mannschaft, and be just enough take this year’s Golden Boot.

1. FRED 22/1 — Despite walking in the shadow of Brazil’s main man Neymar, Fred is our No. 1 favorite for winning the Golden Boot this summer. The Barcelona forward  is a great bet for the price and his international record speaks for itself. He was the top goal scorer at last year’s Confederations Cup, and has scored 16 times in 31 appearances for Brazil. Fred arrives at the 2014 World Cup with 62 league goals in 96 outings, and facing a relatively easy group should get plenty of chances for goals against Croatia, Mexico and Cameroon.
